Statement

Katalina Barrera is an artist and educator based out of New York, New York.  She received her BFA in Photography at Pratt Institute in 2020. Currently, she is obtaining her Masters in Education from Touro University.

Katalina’s art focuses on themes of death, spirituality, and the suppression of feeling within the collective unconscious. Our ever changing state of existence is expressed through the use of different alternative processes in photography. She is heavily influenced by her past archival work of historic photographic materials, her past work as an antique collections photographer, and her work as a teacher. Currently she is executing a photo sculpture project called Schadenfreude.

Katalina has shown work both nationally and internationally. Most notably she has exhibited with Pratt Institute, Penumbra Foundation, 14BC Gallery, and is currently part of the Joy and Grief Exhibition at Kolaj Institute. She has been an artist resident at Arts, Letters, and Numbers and Kolaj Institute. She has also recently been published in FotoNostrum for the 24th Julia Margaret Cameron Photography Awards.
